Wellenbad n°1

Underwater sound installation and live concerts in two public swimming halls in Düsseldorf and Bonn.

Wellenbad n°1 is an installation as well as concerts with sounds, noises and electroacoustic music experienced under, above and within water. In Wellenbad n°1 water and sound waves meet a floating audience.

Over the course of a week Trio Wellenbad presented an underwater sound installation in two municipal swimming pools, the Münstertherme Düsseldorf and the Frankenbad Bonn, using underwater loudspeakers. During the regular opening hours, swimmers and bathers could listen to the installation as soon as they put their ears under water. As the finale of the installation, the trio, together with guest artists Anna Schütten and Oxana Omelchuk, presented a live electro-acoustic concert in both pools via several loudspeakers under and above water.

/// compositions

Fließrichtung by Nathalie Brum
Fließrichtung is a dive into the world of hydraulic engineering. The architect and sound artist Nathalie Brum explored the Moselstaustufe Detzem (Moselle barrage in Detzem) and the experimental hall of the hydraulic engineers at RWTH Aachen University. The functional, scientific view of the element of water, but also man’s attempt to tame water by means of buildings, inspired Brum to create this work. Sounds, concepts and signals flow into one another and form an acoustic condensate of hydraulic engineering: technical, poetic, cryptic. With the voices of senior research assistant Dr Elena-Marie Klopries, narrator Mareike Schäfer and radio announcements from the Moselstaustufe Detzem.

Oder andere Wellen by Joseph Baader and Vincent Stange
Wave movements are particularly visible in water. A movement that spreads out, gets smaller and smaller until it disappears at some point. The composers Joseph Baader and Vincent Stange explore various aspects of waves in sound, from periodic movements to chaotic formations, including radio waves, water waves, sine waves, plasma waves and modulation waves.
Oder andere Wellen is dedicated to the diversity, power and beauty of waves with four compositional miniatures.
